Cookies, Google Consent Mode and More
Cookie Banner Implementation
There’s a lot of legislation when it comes to website privacy, cookies, and personal data. GDPR, PECR, DUAA, etc.
I’m not a lawyer, but I do know a properly set up cookie banner when I see one! And if you’re doing marketing for your site, it’s so important to get it right.
For example, you need to make sure that Google Consent Mode v2 is in place. And you’ll want Enhanced Conversions in your Google Ads account.
You may ever want a server-side analytics setup.
You don’t need to understand what this all means (although I’m happy to explain).
Just trust me: you want to get this right.
Compliance vs. data
Implementing a cookie banner is a balancing act between respecting users (which is the aim of all the legislation) while not losing all your marketing data.
You will lose some. That’s a given. People who opt out of cookies shouldn’t be tracked with cookies. But by implementing techniques like Enhanced Conversions and Google Consent Mode, you can fill in some of the blanks and keep your accounts running effectively.
I see a lot of cookie banners that don’t actually do anything at all! You can’t just stick a banner on your site and assume you’re compliant. It doesn’t work like that.
Just as bad though, is a banner that encourages users to ignore it. That’s the same as them rejecting cookies, resulting in data lost unnecessarily.
Getting some advice and allowing an expert to set things up is the best way forward.
CookieScript
The Consent Management Platform (CMP) I recommend is CookieScript.
I have a lot of experience with this. It’s quick and easy to set up. It’s cheap. And it has a range of options to tailor the banner to your site.
Full disclosure: if you sign up via this link, I get a kickback on your monthly fee. But I do genuinely believe this is the best solution out there. I’ve tried quite a few!
Do a good thing
If you’re a value-based organisation, you’ll want to make sure you’re treating your users right. That means respecting their choices and implementing a cookie banner that works for them.
However, you also want to minimise the impact on your marketing data.
By hiring a cookie banner expert like me, you can achieve both of those objectives.
