What are meta tags?

By “meta tags”, we mean title tags and meta descriptions. They sit in the code of your website pages and can appear in the search results.

They’re important because:

  • The keywords in the title tag are one of the most important ranking factors for SEO.
  • They tell users what you page is about.
  • They encourage users to click through to your page.

What will fit and display properly in the search results is based on the width of the area in pixels, not the number of characters.

If you’re measuring in characters, you’ll likely run into problems now and then. That’s because Google uses Arial as its font, and different characters are different sizes.
